Data Governance Review

What is it?

Many organisations recognise the value of  managing data as an asset. However few of the projects and initiatives to develop the culture, frameworks, accountability and processes have been successful.

The reasons for these failures are myriad. We do not start believing we know all the answers. However, our review methodology is based on working with over sixty organisations across multiple sectors. This gives us a broad understanding of what has probably gone wrong, and -more importantly- how to fix it.

The review process considers data through four lenses; people, process, data management capability / maturity and technology. We run a series of one to one interviews and workshops to gauge ‘the state of the data nation’. From there we work with you to show which best practice components and plans will put you back on the right path.

What can I do with it?

It is important to understand every organisation is different. We don’t believe in fixed format reports or boilerplate recommendations. Every engagement is customised to meet the specific needs of the organisation, with the one standard output being short and long term actionable recommendations.

However, there are ‘themes’ to the outcomes which include:

  • Re-starting a stalled project or initiative
  • Building a business case for funding and/or additional resource
  • Developing compelling messaging to support cultural change
  • Understanding the maturity of capability for data and recommending areas for priority

While not a complete list, it shows the kind of engagements we have been retained for.

Who else is using it?

These reviews are often our first engagement with an organisation. We have carried out over thirty of these reviews in the last five years. We use this experience to build templates, accelerators and operational plans.

We check back regularly to understand if implementing the recommendations have been successful (or not!). We are also very proud to have many of these organisations as long terms clients. Much of our work post review is through mentoring and support.

How much does it cost?

We will offer a review as a fixed price engagement. While we customise our approach for each customer, a ‘lightweight’ review will generally take two calendar weeks from first interview to recommendations.

Longer reviews are more common and tend to be completed within a two to three month period.

All our reviews are likely to include:

  • Stakeholder interviews
  • Discovery workshops
  • Desk based review of material
  • Development workshops
  • Maturity assessments (both as-is and to-be)
  • Customisation of best practice solutions
  • Draft recommendations and plan reviews
  • Final report
  • Post report support

In addition, we can offer bespoke engagements based on your requirements.
